How to Challenge Poor Practice Without Losing the Team
Good managers do not choose between relationships and standards. They build enough trust to be curious, then become clear when practice is not good enough.
Questions worth taking back to the home
- Start with what you have actually observed or evidenced.
- Ask what was happening for the staff member before assuming intent.
- Bring the conversation back to the child’s experience and expected standard.
- Be clear about what needs to change and how you will know it has changed.
FCC coaching point
Curiosity is not softness. It helps you understand the problem properly so the challenge that follows is fair, specific and useful.
Use this as a reflective prompt alongside the child’s plans, your organisation’s procedures, professional advice and any current regulatory or statutory guidance that applies.
