Questions worth practising out loud
Go beyond the Statement of Purpose. What should children and staff actually feel, experience and notice if your leadership is working?
Think beyond incident numbers. Triangulate children’s voice, staff practice, plans, patterns, professional feedback and your own oversight.
Training is one part. Consider observation, supervision, confidence, consistency, reflective learning and how staff translate knowledge into practice.
Use a simple thread: what you noticed → what you understood → what you changed → how you know it made a difference.
Show that relationships and accountability can coexist. Explain how you create enough safety for staff to be honest while remaining clear about standards.
Talk about patterns, debriefs, child voice, plans, risk, team reflection and whether learning actually changed practice.
Connect wellbeing to safe care: supervision, workload, emotional impact, rest, team culture and recognising when pressure is changing practice.
Bring it back to children. Systems matter, but the strongest answer explains what became safer, warmer, more stable or more effective because of your leadership.
Do not memorise a perfect answer. Know your examples, know the impact and practise explaining the thinking that sits behind your decisions.
